Abstract

India's industrial sector has long served as a key driver of economic growth, employment generation, and technological advancement. However, in recent years, the sector has experienced periods of slowdown due to a combination of structural weaknesses, declining private investment, weak consumer demand, global economic uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, rising input costs, and policy implementation challenges. These factors have adversely affected manufacturing output, industrial productivity, and employment opportunities, thereby slowing overall economic progress. This paper examines the major causes of India's industrial slowdown and evaluates their impact on economic development. It further analyzes the effectiveness of government initiatives such as Make in India, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, infrastructure development, and ease-of-doing-business reforms in revitalizing industrial growth. The study also explores strategies for sustainable industrial development, including increased investment in technology and innovation, strengthening MSMEs, improving infrastructure, enhancing skill development, promoting exports, and encouraging public-private partnerships. The paper concludes that a comprehensive policy framework focusing on competitiveness, digital transformation, and inclusive industrialization is essential to restore industrial momentum and achieve long-term economic resilience in India.
