Vol. 1 No. 1 (2026): The Importance of the Vedas in Indian Civilization

The Vedas are among the oldest surviving literary and philosophical texts in the world and constitute the intellectual and spiritual foundation of Indian civilization. This article explores the historical development, structure, and significance of the four Vedas—Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda—and examines their influence on religion, philosophy, ethics, education, literature, and social institutions in ancient India. It discusses how Vedic knowledge shaped the evolution of later traditions, including the Upanishads, Puranas, and classical schools of Indian philosophy. The article also considers the continuing relevance of Vedic ideas in contemporary scholarship and cultural discourse. By presenting an overview of Vedic literature and its enduring contributions, this study highlights the central role of the Vedas in understanding the civilizational heritage of Bharat.
